Kirkmichael Community Garden is a little space just a short walk from the village centre, looked after by a brilliant mix of around 20 local volunteers who help out when they can, mostly on an informal basis. We grow fruit and veg together, keep the space tidy and welcoming, and make sure there’s always something colourful or tasty coming up in the beds or in our 15-metre polytunnel.
Everything we harvest is shared with volunteers, and whatever’s left goes out to the community for donations. It’s a simple setup that keeps good food local and brings people together.
The polytunnel needs plenty of watering through the summer, and the outdoor beds need regular weeding. One of our volunteers also tends a beautiful wildflower garden that puts on an amazing show of colour in spring and summer, helping the pollinators along, including the bees in our hive.
