Welcome to Kirkmichael Community Garden

Kirkmichael Community Garden is a little space just a short walk from the village centre, looked after by a brilliant mix of around 20 local volunteers who help out when they can, mostly on an informal basis. We grow fruit and veg together, keep the space tidy and welcoming, and make sure there’s always something colourful or tasty coming up in the beds or in our 15-metre polytunnel.

Everything we harvest is shared with volunteers, and whatever’s left goes out to the community for donations. It’s a simple setup that keeps good food local and brings people together.

The polytunnel needs plenty of watering through the summer, and the outdoor beds need regular weeding. One of our volunteers also tends a beautiful wildflower garden that puts on an amazing show of colour in spring and summer, helping the pollinators along, including the bees in our hive.

A big part of what we do is working with the local primary school. With support from two of our volunteers, we’ve been running a programme with all the children, where they visit the garden every other week to grow things, learn, and spend time in nature.

We’ve also started holding small gatherings, like our recent chutney chop, where a wee group got together to turn all the green tomatoes that didn’t manage to ripen this year into a cracking batch of chutney. It’s a fun way to use up what we grow and spend time with friends.

But the garden isn’t just about growing things — it’s a place to meet people, learn a bit, relax, or simply enjoy being outdoors. Whether you’d like to lend a hand, wander through, or just come for the craic, you’re always welcome.
